Jerry Apps recalls winters growing up on a farm in central Wisconsin during the latter years of the Depression and through World War II. Before electricity came to this part of Waushara County, farmers milked cows by hand with the light of a kerosene lantern, woodstoves heated the drafty farm homes, and “making wood” was a major part of every winter’s work. The children in Jerry’s rural community walked to a country school that was heated with a woodstove and had no indoor plumbing. Wisconsin winters then were a time of reflection, of planning for next year, and of families drawing together. Jerry describes how winter influenced farm families and suggests that those of us who grow up with harsh northern winters are profoundly affected in ways we often are not aware.

About the Author
Jerry Apps was born and raised on a central Wisconsin farm before electricity, indoor plumbing, and central heating came to the country. He has been a rural his­torian and environmental writer for more than forty years and has published fiction and nonfiction books on many rural topics, including Ringlingville USA, Casper Jaggi: Master Swiss Cheese Maker, Horse-Drawn Days, Old Farm, Garden Wisdom, and Limping through Life for the Wisconsin Historical Society Press. He is a former county extension agent and professor emeritus at the University of Wis­consin College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. Jerry and his wife, Ruth, divide their time between their home in Madison and their farm, Roshara, west of Wild Rose.

About the Author

Beatrice Chestnut, PhD MA is a licensed psychotherapist, coach, and business consultant based in San Francisco. She has a PhD in communication studies and an MA in clinical psychology. She is author of the book, The Complete Enneagram: 27 Paths to Greater Self-Knowledge. She served as President of the International Enneagram Association (IEA) from 2006-2007, and in 2008 and 2009 she was founding co-editor of the IEA’s Enneagram Journal. Excellent book for all leaders to raise their consciousness and emotional intelligence. It will be most helpful for people who already know their type, or have a strong idea of what their type is. It will help you recognize your strengths, habits and motives and have a better understanding of the same for people around you. I love that it makes the point that we all have unique gifts and there isn't one "best" approach.I highly recommend if you have interest in the Enneagram, or use it in coaching / consulting.

Although I am not a huge fan of using the enneagram as a tool for “typing” in the workplace, I felt that Chestnut did a great job of reassuring readers of her same hesitiations. I felt she did really well reminding readers of the Enneagrams true intent and to not get lost in simply typing ourselves and even using that as a way to coach or critique others upon.

I think I must own just about every Enneagram leadership book ever published, and I have to say that Bea Chestnut’s new book, “The 9 Types of Leadership” is the best one I’ve come across. It’s insightful and thorough, as well as practical and pragmatic. I’m so impressed with it that I’m using it as part of the curriculum for a leadership academy I’m running at my organization. Good job, Bea!

It clearly written with a consistent, easy-to-follow format which gives quick accessibility to key points for each type in varying work situations. Every leader would benefit from reading this book and keeping it close by as a regular reference.

Beatrice Chestnut does it again in her 9 Types of Leadership. Anyone interested in becoming more aware of their leadership style or understanding others leadership style in a deep dive sort of way is in for a treat. This book delivers!
